Week 1 (Oct. 3 – 7)

Friday, October 7th

Applied Technology 6-1

You have exactly 2 weeks of classes to complete your bridge span. While many groups are getting close to the half-way mark, I see some groups struggling to keep on track. A completed bridge = full marks. There are plenty of lunch hours to work on your project should you and your group fall behind. Everyone should be working as a team. Likewise – clean up is everyone’s responsibility. We still need work on this!

Woodshop 8-2

Plan out your next project, please! You have access to the online resources and the ability to form your plans on paper. We have the western maple and walnut wood to choose from. Still waiting on knotty pine, purple heart and cherry wood. Clean up is becoming an issue for those on the lathes and in the cutting areas.

Science 7

Science is continuing in the computer lab today. I will have my computer and iPad ready for students that wish to work on getting their ideas down for the project. We will have a few days more to work on the project.

So far we have the following elements represented:

  • Uranium (U)
  • Neon (Ne)
  • Silver (Ag)
  • Platinum (Pt)
  • Carbon (C)
  • Copper (Cu)
  • Helium (He)
  • Silicon (Si)
  • Mercury (Hg)
  • Cobalt (Co)

That’s great!

NOTE: Science Fair concept explained further: Your proposal should be submitted today, if possible. If you need more time on the written proposal then please have this document written up by Tuesday’s class by the latest. (Tuesday, October 11th). Remember – you need to start with a guided question for your Science Fair.

Here is a link to the Science Fair outline should you need an extra copy of it.

Thursday, October 6th

Applied Technology 6-1/6-2

We are continuing to build wooden bridges. It is important that we are maximizing class time and delegate tasks to team members. Nobody should be left out. Everyone should be contributing to the team. Clean up remains a challenge so we will be starting a bit earlier today. Note: some of your classmates will be away. You may have to work in a smaller group or on your own for today.

Applied Technology 7

It is important that all students working with paint understand the rules and regulations with aerosol paints. Students who are working with Iron Oxide primer/solvent based enamels must be wearing a solvent filtering respirator and eye protection. All cut marks and imperfections must be sanded out first before primer is applied. Once this step is completed, we are sanding the primer coat with 220 grit and then again using 400 grit.

I will be introducing everyone to the Science Fair proposals today. These proposals are to be filled out and submitted by Friday. We are also continuing along with the Element Project research today as well.

Woodshop 8-1

Our #4 lathe is still not fixed. We are still are working with 3 lathes so we’ll have to be on 10 minute rotations to get the bowls spun. Remember, I’m opening up the shop at lunch, so come on in! The box project is still underway and so is the passive audio amplifier.

Wednesday, October 5th

Woodshop 8-2

We are continuing on with bowls and boxes. More work needs to be done on prep of these projects and clean up. Everyone needs to be involving in putting away tools and equipment in store lock up.

Applied Technology 6-2

We are continuing to work on the bridges.

Reminder:

A timeline will be set for these bridges for Friday, Oct. 21st – finished construction.

Testing the bridges will take place on Monday, Oct. 24th.

Science 7

We are continuing to work on digital Prezi, PowerPoint or Keynote presentation for your chosen element. Click here for the presentation organizer sheet that will be started today. This sheet is worth 25 marks and is required by all group members to be completed (1 per team). I expect all team leaders to be delegating tasks today. I will be checking on your progress today.

A sample presentation can be viewed via the link below.

Applied Technology 6-1

Continuing with the bridge spans. Please make sure to label and protect your projects.

If you don’t put your names on your projects – how do expect anyone else to know?

We are going to do a clean up of the projects and get a handle on some organization before starting today.

We are continuing on with the projects today. Please have a look at doing your sketches and measurements for your next project IF you are waiting for the wood lathes. Have a look the eBooks for download or browse the Youtube videos below on (wooden) passive audio amplifiers.

eBooks for Woodshop 8-1, 8-2

File Format Pdf-507x507

As promised, I have created a PDF copy of some project books that are critical to class. You can view these books on your smartphone, tablet or home computer. You will need a passcode to open each book. Please send me a “contact me” with your email and I will send you the code for your references.

Upcoming Events

Roctober is fast approaching! Next week, we are hoping to have our first launch of the season. We will be launching Loc Precision’s Lil’Nuke, AeroTech (7 ft tall) Mirage and a few other rockets. Likewise, we will be launching on AeroTech’s “blue thunder” “redline” and “white lightning” propellent. Getting ready for a visually spectacular launch.

Applied Technology 7

We are working on the CO2 cars final stages of production. First, we are priming the cars with Silica gray or Iron Oxide shop primer. Then once the cars are completely dry, we are dry and wet sanding the cars with 400 grit paper. This will leave a silky smooth undercoat that will provide a perfect surface to the paint to adhere to.

Woodshop 8-1/8-2

More Western Maple and Peruvian Walnut wood was delivered this past Friday to the shop. This will be the last delivery of the wood used for the projects for this term. Choose wisely.

Applied Technology 6-2

We are gluing with Epoxy today. The bridges are coming along very well but clean up and organization is still needing some fine tuning. This is a major project and it requires concentration and planning. You cannot just build the bridge ad-hock. Also, teams must be working together to build. Cooperation is the name of the game here!
