Week 3 (Sept 19 – 23)

Friday, Sept. 23rd

Applied Technology 6-1

We will be continuing on with bridge construction. Remember, this is a very involved project and requires team-work. Everyone must be working together for the sake of the team. Clean up and organization is critical!

Woodshop 8-2

Everyone is working in building either a wooden bowl, plate or a box. Remember when gluing – that both sides of the wood surface that you intend to glue, must have glue applied. You must also use heavy pressure from clamps on all 4 sides of your wooden bowl project. When using hardwood – we are using Titebond III glue as it has far superior bonding strength than regular carpentry glue.

Have a look at some of the bowls underway right now, below!

Science 7

I will be collecting all Science duo tangs for Monday, Sept 26.

We will also have the opportunity to see some Science experiments that relate to our chemistry unit  – and make an observation and form a hypothesis about what might happen. Remember, a hypothesis is an educated prediction as to what may or may not occur. You must use logic to make an accurate hypothesis. You will also be making an observation as to what occurred. Documenting (digitally) the reaction is strongly encouraged. Just a hint – wear sunglasses tomorrow for the reaction.

The homework for the weekend is currently ready for download. It is in relation to the chemical reaction seen during today’s class which is Iron Oxide Thermite.

Thursday, Sept. 22nd

Applied Tech 6-1

We are continuing to build on the wooden bridges. Remember, this project will take time. My suggestion is that all teams work on creating wooden laminated beams.  However, I expect that all students will work together and take ownership of their materials and organize their workspace.  Clean up is critical!

Applied Tech 7-2

We are continuing to work on the CO2 cars. We are using our designs to improve performance through aerodynamics. Next week we will see the airflow demonstration using the wind tunnel and a smoke generator.

Applied Tech 6-2

We are continuing to build on the wooden bridges from yesterday. Remember, this project will take time. My suggestion is that all teams work on creating wooden laminated beams to start.  However, I expect that all students will work together and take ownership of their materials and organize their workspace. Clean up is critical!

Science 7

We will be working together on the Science 7 homework from last class. We will work further on states of matter. We will be watching the video series via NASA on states of matter. This video will also go further into the topic of density as well.  On Friday we will have yet another experiment. This will involve a reaction between Aluminum and a metal oxide.

Woodshop 8-1

We are continuing with the lathe demonstration today and going over safety in the shop. We will also be prepping the bowl blanks for turning and looking closely at design using Peruvian walnut wood and western maple as well. Remember, I will be checking your designs before you can access your materials.

Wednesday, Sept.21st

Woodshop 8-2

We are continuing with the lathe demonstration today and going over safety in the shop. We will also be prepping the bowl blanks for turning and looking closely at design using Peruvian walnut wood and western maple as well. Remember, I will be checking your designs before you can access your materials.

Applied Technology 6-2

We are continuing with bridge construction. Remember that we are using epoxy resin and CA glue to build these bridges. Use newspaper under your bridge span to prevent it from sticking to the table.

Applied Technology 7-1

We are continuing on with the CO2 dragster car designs.

**All rocketry materials are now on order and should be at school by next Monday.

Tuesday, Sept. 20th

Science 7.

Questions that we had on Friday, Sept.16th will be due today. If for some reason you require some help on these questions during Tuesday’s class, come see me. We are going to be getting into the Chemistry Unit. Our first content area with be on the states of matter. We will have several demonstrations to illustrate the main concepts for today.

Today’s assignment can be found here for download.

We are going to have a very cool demonstration today. Extremely cool…. -80 degrees C to be exact. This will help illustrate some of the concepts in this unit.

Today we will be looking at the following concepts via Science Probe 7 (Ch 4.1/4.2):

• 4 common states of matter (solid, liquid, gas and plasma)

• physical properties

• melting point

• freezing point

• boiling point

• sublimation

• evaporation

• condensation
