Week 4 (Sept.26-30)


Friday, Sept. 30

Applied Technology 6-1

We are continuing to work on the bridges. However, we are running low on Epoxy. Please use Epoxy for the joints and weak spots on your bridge only.

The timeline is set for these bridges for Friday, Oct. 21st – finished construction.

Testing the bridges will take place on Monday, Oct. 24th.

 

Woodshop 8-2

We are continuing on with bowls and boxes. More work needs to be done on the prep of these projects and clean up. Everyone needs to be involving in putting away tools and equipment in store lock up. More wood will be available for your next project come Monday.

 

Science 7

We are starting the first stage of a project on The Periodic Table of Elements today. We will be working on this project for the next week. If more time is required, I will add more time. Most the work will be done at school.

Thursday, Sept. 29

Applied Technology 6-1

Applied Technology 7

We are now into the sanding and priming phase of our CO2 cars. Sanding the cars to a smooth finish using a combination of 220 grit and 400 grit papers is a critical step.  Once the primer is applied, it is then time for paint.

Woodshop 8-1, 8-2

We are continuing on with the bowl and box project. Likewise, if you are waiting for the lathe after you have cut out you bowl blank, please move onto a box or passive audio amplifier project. There is just enough wood for another project and more wood will be ready for next week. I am ordering more western maple and black walnut wood. Nobody should just be sitting with nothing to do. Please use your time effectively in class.

Science 7

We are starting the first stage of a project on The Periodic Table of Elements. In a group of no more than 3 – you will be introducing us to your chosen element starting on Friday. We will be watching a short video clip below and then head down to the shop where I will introduce you to a very special element. Hint – it is light weight and found in Group IA, also found in table salt.  What is this element?

Applied Technology 7

It is important that all students working with paint understand the rules and regulations with aerosol paints. Students who are working with Iron Oxide primer/solvent based enamels must be wearing a solvent filtering respirator and eye protection. All cut visible cut marks and imperfections must be sanded out first before primer is applied. Once this step is completed, we are sanding the primer coat with 220 grit and then again using 400 grit.


Tuesday, Sept. 27

Science 7

Today we will be writing up our first official lab. We will be having two unique chemical reactions – one demonstration is a decomposition reaction while the other reaction is based solely on combustion.

Procedure –

  • students performing the experiment wore gloves and eye protection for this experiment and gathered outside for the experiment
  • using 3 – 1000mL pyrex graduated cylinders we first poured 250 mL of 30% Hydrogen Peroxide into the cylinder
  • next we added a small amount of dye to each of the 1000 mL cylinder (3-5 mL)
  • then dish soap was added to the 1000 mL graduated cylinder  (15 mL)
  • carefully – we then agitated the mixture until the Hydrogen Peroxide mixed with the dish soap and dye
  • next we added the catalyst – Manganese Dioxide, carefully directly to the  1000 mL graduated cylinder. This process of adding the catalyst, started a chemical reaction .

Observation – What did you observe directly during the reaction?

Conclusion –  Use your information from the hypothesis and observation to make a statement about the experiment. Did the experiment perform as you expected?

Monday, Sept. 26

I am collecting all Science 7 notebooks today in the morning during homeroom and will have of these returned by Wednesday, Sept 28th during homeroom (Morning). Detailed feedback will be given as well.

Applied Technology 6-2

We are gluing with Epoxy today. The bridges are coming along very well but clean up and organization is still needing some fine tuning. This is a major project and it requires concentration and planning. You cannot just build the bridge ad-hock. Also, teams must be working together to build. Cooperation is the name of the game here!
